This last weekend the weather was pretty good, so Jeff and I
decided to head up the hill and check out a piece of property a
friend of mine ownes. Over the last 160 years there has been
quite a bit of gold mining done in the area. The plan was to do
a bit of detecting and see if we could locate any old mining
camps and do some bottle digging.
The property isn't too far of a drive, but once you hit the
dirt road, things slowed down a lot. The dirt road is in horrible
condition and it was very slow going . After about an hour of
driving we located the area . We grabbed our packs and
headed right out. We hiked around for awhile and took a
general assessment of the different areas where the miners
had been working. We decided to try the oldest looking area.
After a bit of looking, we located a flat that look like a good
camping spot. While I was detecting the area, Jeff got the
camera out and started filming. I noticed there was very little
trash, a square nail now and then. After a while, I did locate a
small area off to one side that had some trash. I picked one of
the stronger targets and started digging. About 8 inches deep,
I located a couple of barrel bands. That was all I found in that
hole! I moved over a bit, to another fairly strong target. Dug
down about 8 inches deep and located a old sardine can. The
can was very old, 1860 to 1870. Problem was, there was no
other trash with it, no broken glass, or anything. After filling
that hole, I had a good loud target about 5 feet away. It turned
out to be a broken axe head that was used for a wedge.
It was starting to get late and we both had things we had to
get done at home, so we called it a day. But the site we
located, I think falls in the 1860's date. So we will definitely be
back to explore little bit more. After all we just got started on
it.
