After our short hike we located the area I wanted to check out. We took a rake with magnets on it to make removing the iron a little quicker. We cleaned up the area then started sifting. We found all kinds of small iron objects, it was obvious that this had to be some type of a workshop or foundry. We were uncovering nuts, bolts, door hinges, part of tools. We probably found from10 to 15 pounds of iron. We're finding quite a few tips off old picks, and I don't understand why they were there, but we must the dug out 15 or 20 of them. But after a couple hours sifting we weren't turning up much of anything worth keeping, so we decided to go for old bottles.
I used my dual box detector to locate several potential trash sites. I started digging and Jeff started exploring the surrounding area. Every now and then he made his way back and help me with the digging and shot some video.
After a full day of digging, it turned out to be a real good day. Jeff and I went home with five old bottles. One of them the top was broke little bit, still it is a nice little bottle. I took home a small plate that was broke in two pieces, but should be easy to repair. A few old buttons to put in the button jar, and one small cast iron foot for some kind of stand.
I will definitely be returning to this site later on this fall, after it has cooled off!
