Many many years ago, when I was a young lad. I heard of a huge gold strike way out in the desert. The rumor was, a man can find enough gold in a month to be rich for the rest of his life. It took what little money I had to buy the supplies that were needed to make the trip. I didn't have enough money left to buy a horse so I had to settle for old burro.
With an old burro, the trip across the desert was slow, and the days were extremely hot. After weeks in this barren landscape I was starting to run a low on food and water. I was beginning to wonder if I would survive the trip through the desert. Early one morning I could see what looked like a town on the horizon. It was about noon when I arrived in the town. I was nearly ran over by a wagon heading out of town in a big hurry. It was stacked high with the people's belongings and their kids were piled on top. As I traveled down the street I notice all the people were running around in a big hurry. People were boarding up windows, running back and forth carrying stuff, the doors were all boarded up, the place was in total chaos.
I've tried to stop and ask a couple of people what was going on. They wouldn't even look at me. They just continued on with whatever it was they were doing, totally ignoring me, like I wasn't even there. Finally out of desperation I grabbed this guy that was running by. I ask him what was going on! He quickly pull away from me and yelled, can't talk - no time - got to get out of here, Big Ed coming to town! And just that quick - he was gone. I kept trying to find out what was going on. And most of all, who was Big Ed? But the people were quickly disappearing and no one was stopping for anything. I didn't know what to do, I was out of food and water. I needed supplies and the town was boarded up, and now the streets were empty.
Just then, off in the distance, through the blur of the heat. I could see a cloud of dust created by something heading straight for town. By the size of the dust cloud at that distance, I could tell whatever it was, it was big and was moving fast. I looked around and the place was completely deserted. I was beginning to get a bit uncomfortable. I was the only guy on the streets. As the object got closer and larger, I began to get a little more concerned. I thought it would be a little safer off the street. In the time it took me to find a hiding place in a recessed doorway, I could now see the object was a man. He was the largest man I had never laid eyes on. He had a huge black beard that covered his entire chest. His arms were bigger than my entire body. His long black unkempt hair, covered most of his features except his coal black eyes. He was riding a massive grizzly bear that had to be 15 feet tall.
At this point I was trapped. He was too close, I had no way of getting out of their without being seen. He road up to the bar, which was right across the street from me. He reach forward and grabbed the bear by the back of the neck, pullback and yelled " whoa". The bear squatted down on it's back legs and came skidding to a stop. He jumped off and backhanded the bear out of his way. The bear rolled 30 feet down the street! He didn't even slow down, just bent forward a bit, as he walked right through the boarded up bar room doors.
I couldn't help but think, who was this guy and where did he come from? I ran across the street and peered through the window. He walked up to the bar, grabbed a full bottle of whiskey bit the top off, and drank it like it was a shot. He did the same thing with ten more bottles in less than a minute. Turned on his heel and was back out before I could move. He turned and looked at me, I froze like a deer in the headlights. My mind went blank, all I could say was " hi - what's your name". He turn away in a hurry and said; can't talk - no time - got to get out of here, Big Ed coming to town.
